The WFU Cuba summer program takes place in the beautiful capital city Havana, an ideal setting to feature Cuba’s diverse culture. Students take SPA 280 or SPA 369. Both focus on culture, society, and history with an opportunity to learn about Cuban literature, music, history, theater, visual/performance arts, architecture, Afro-Cuban religions, and entrepreneurship. Students engage with professors, artists, and experts from the University of Havana, the School of the Arts, and cultural foundations and organizations. Outside the classroom in Havana, students have the opportunity to participate in poetry slams, music concerts, and art happenings. They also enjoy activities such as horseback riding, hiking to the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes, and swimming at the beaches.

When students return to WFU for their fall semester, they take SPA 198 Service Learning, a 3 credit hour elective, to work on projects in the Winston-Salem community that build on their Cuban experiences and to create cultural happenings and exhibits on the WFU campus.

SPA 212 and/or Permission of Instructor are required. Courses taken during the program count toward a Spanish major or minor.
