Modern and Contemporary Iberian Cultural Studies
Ryan Goodman is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish at Wake Forest University. His primary field of specialization is Modern and Contemporary Iberian Cultural Studies with research interests that include poetry, religion, tourism, memory studies, and social movements. His research explores Spanish and Galician cultural production through a global and transhistorical lens.
Goodman’s current work titled Wayfaring Visions examines the 19th century reinvention of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela by mapping out the many political and cultural projects that confronted this modern return to religious tradition. The book ultimately demonstrates how Santiago became a contested symbol of national and transatlantic historical memory.
Goodman frequently participates in Galician Studies conferences across the country and is an active collaborator with the College of William & Mary’s Institute for Pilgrimage Studies, where he has taught a study abroad program and led students along the Camino de Santiago.
