Dr. Eva Álvarez Vázquez is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish at Wake Forest University. She earned her Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures and Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in Iberian Literary and Cultural Studies, and holds a Graduate Certificate in Film Studies. Her teaching and research interests include contemporary Iberian culture, memory studies, gender and queer studies, and film and media studies. She is trained in videographic criticism as a creative research and pedagogical practice, and her work has appeared in journals including [in]Transition. Journal of Videographic Film & Movie Image Studies, and Open Screens.
Her book project, tentatively titled From Ruin to Revolution: Spain’s Deindustrialization and Counterhegemonic Cultural Narratives, examines how contemporary Iberian cultural products and practices engage with the legacy of deindustrialization in several peripheral regions of Spain. Her research examines industrial restructuring as a site for critique and reflection on Spain’s national identity and futurity, interrogating narratives of modernity and progress, memory politics, and neoliberal economic models shaped during the country’s transition to democracy, while exploring the environmental and queer imaginaries that emerge from postindustrial landscapes.
Her commitment to teaching Spanish extends beyond the classroom. Through her work at the Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center, she has supported Spanish language access initiatives in educational, special education, and community legal contexts by coordinating professional development programs for bilingual staff, conducting proficiency assessments, and providing individualized feedback on interpreting and translation performance.
