Latin American Literature and Cultural Studies
Ana Cecilia Calle Poveda is a Colombian multidisciplinary scholar. She is an Assistant Professor of Afro-Latin American Cultural Studies at Wake Forest University. She holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures and Cultures from The University of Texas at Austin. There, she specialized in African and African American Diasporas, and Sound Studies. She is interested in the ways in which certain tropes of the “tropics” travel through popular music, discography, literature, and performance. Her research has been funded by the Tinker Foundation and the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies at the University of Texas, Austin.
She is founder and editor of the Colombian independent press Himpar Editores. Ana is also an audio producer and sound designer. Her latest audio documentary, “From the Center Out: Archiving Black Dance in the US, produced with Laura Marina Boria, was broadcasted at the Radiophrenia Festival (Scotland, 2021) and xmtr.fm (UK 2022). Her work has been showcased in South American audio festivals and sound art radio stations, such as Festival Sur Aural (Bolivia, 2020), Festival Tiempo Real (Colombia 2021), and Radio Caso (Argentina 2021). She dj’s with the all-women, all-vinyl collective Chulita Vinyl Club.
